Chapter Fifteen: Love at the Lake

Danielle tired of staring out the window waiting for Malcolm to return. "I wonder if he went back to Denver again."

Charmaine looked up from her book. "If he did, I hope he spends the night. It's getting dark."

"Maybe he went to Western World for another outfit," Ernie teased.

Danielle couldn't help but laugh. "That was awful, but it's the thought that counts, right?"

He snickered. "Something like that."

She hopped up. "I'm going to take Jersey for a ride."

"Don't go far," her mother warned. "It'll be just as dark for you."

Danielle giggled as she saddled her horse. "Mom is just as much a worry wart now as she was when I was a kid. She hates driving after dark and thinks everyone else should, too, and she thinks I need to be tucked into bed as soon as the sun goes down."

With no destination in mind, she galloped wide open across the field. Her hair waved behind her, and the wind cooled her face. The humidity was high after the storm, and by the time she slowed, she had reached the small lake that accumulated at the base of the mountain from the runoff stream.

She peeked around. There was no one around, and she knew from experience that most people didn't even know the lake was there. Before she talked herself out of it, she stripped down to her bra and panties and jumped in the cool water.

Except that the water was freezing.

She came up sputtering. "Holy shit that's cold."

"You should really test the water before you just go jumping in."

She spun around to find Logan standing on the bank, shirtless, and removing his boots. She treaded water as she stared at his abs. "What are you doing here?"

"Obviously the same thing you are." He kicked his boot off and took off his sock. "It's hot and humid, and the water is cold."

"How'd you know I was here?"

He grinned. "That was a bonus. I had no idea. I just wanted to cool off, and most people don't know about this little gem."

"Oh." Her eyes were focused on his hands as they fumbled with the button on his jeans.

"Do you want to look away, or are comfortable with what you're about to see?"

Her face burned even in the cold water. "Aren't you worried about shrinkage?" Her eyes widened as it occurred to her what she had said out loud.

He laughed. "Well, at least I know where your mind is." He dropped his jeans and tossed them on his boots. "Geronimo!"

He cannonballed into the water near her, splashing the cold water onto her heated face. When he came up, he whooped. "You weren't kidding. This water is damned cold."

She propelled herself a little bit away to put some distance between them. He looked sexy as fuck in a pair of jeans, but he looked damned fine almost naked, too.

He noticed her actions, and a wicked grin crossed his face. "Where are you going?"

"I'm just keeping a modest distance, that's all.
